Returning To Japanese – My Thoughts

July 30th, 2010

Well as I mentioned a few posts back that I’m going to gradually get back into studying Japanese, I’ve been trying to work out the best way to go about it whether I should start from scratch with Heisig or continue on from where I left off.

Now I read the post over on alljapaneseallthetime.com where Katz suggests starting from scratch just as if you where first starting to learning Japanese now I though hmm maybe that’s a good idea as obviously there’s going to be a lot of Kanji that I’ve forgotten with such a long brake, but the more I think about it the less I like the idea fair enough we should all know the Kanji if we want to become fluent, but to be honest I really don’t want to sit there for months again studying something that I’ve done before and that I know is somewhere is my memory. To me it would be a waste of time and I’d only get bored and give up.

Now I’ve been reading Japanese text again and watching the odd Anime I’ve noticed that as soon as I remember what a Kanji is or when I look the meaning up again it just jumps back into memory like it was only yesterday I’d learned it, like it was never forgotten in the first place. I just needed to tell my mind that I need the information again and it sticks pretty much instantly. Like they always say once you’ve learned something once it becomes much easier to relearn and remember.

So to be honest I’m not worried I’ve no plans to relearn Heisig as I know the knowledge is already there and I’ll benefit and advance much faster by learning what I want to learn. The only way to truly learn something is to enjoy it and find your own method not that I’m saying Heisig was a bad idea for anybody just starting to learn Japanese its probably the best way to start, but don’t worry about having to do it all again if you have a brake you will find it will soon pop back into memory without any real effort.

As long as you keep in mind that learning a language is easy all it takes is a little time and effort then you’ve nothing to worry about.

So my basic study plan at the moment as I’m going to have to fit this around a tight schedule with my other duties/hobbies is to have a quick scan through a few of my Japanese grammar books to relearn the bits I’ve forgotten (especially recommend Japanese In Manga Land for grammar) and then to start my sentence mining again now I have a better idea how to sentence mine it should be more fruitful. To supplement the study I’ll starting watching some anime again oh and I’ve gotta re watch the GTO live action series easily my favourite Japanese live action so far :D feel free to recommend others!

I leave you with a funny robot :D

Korean Language Log 1

January 16th, 2010

Well as I mentioned in a previous post I was going to learn to read Hangul 한굴 this year well days after that post I went ahead and re-learned the Hangul probably took 1-2 days to memorize them all and a little longer to get the pronunciations and irregularity’s correct, still probably not perfect but can read quite well now I just need to speed up.

After getting the taste of Hangul my attention turned to actually wanting to learn Korean itself as I’ve always had an interest in Korea and its culture other than Japanese its by far my next favorite language, so for a while I’m going to switch my attention to learning Korean especially after my long hiatus from Japanese its very daunting to re-start 1700 sentences that haven’t been reviewed for 5 months or so.

Although to not forget my Japanese I’m going to were I can translate my Korean sentences into Japanese and avoid English as much as possible the great thing about Korean for anybody who has studied Japanese is the many similarity between the two languages.

e.g.
저 – jeo = Similar to 私
씨 – ssi = similar to さん Mr, Mrs, Miss
은 / 는 – eun / neun = Topic Marker similar to は
입니다 – nida = similar to です ”to be”
이 / 가 – -i / ga = Subject marker

저는 학생입니다. = I (topic marker) student am a – I am a student

The sentence structure is pretty much the same too as above. Now that I know the writing its just a case of learning the vocab and grammar so should be pretty quick to match my Japanese ability and to pass it, currently the thing I’m finding most difficult is getting the pronunciation correct but that just needs practice.

So I intend to keep these regular logs on my Korean progress and also for a place to list things I’ve learned which will hopefully be beneficial for myself and anybody else that’s interested in or learning Korean.

Oh and one last thing to finish up I’m also going to set a few mini goals (as suggested by Squintox) each time I make a log as a way to keep pushing myself along and as a guide of my progress.

- Finish Beginner series 1 of Korean Class 101 – 5/31
- Add 200 vocab/sentences to Anki – 62/200
- Watch at least 1 Korean movie a week – 0 (3-iron has arrived ^^)
- Listen to more audio 20Mins today so far (still collecting things together for this)

Still here + Japanese Update

May 30th, 2009

Not posted in a while as I’ve been busy with work and catching up with some xbox games I know not the best use of my time :) and some Anime a better use of my Japanese environment time, although I’ve knocked my Japanese up a gear over the last week been doing much more iknow 100′s of items, entering new sentences in anki including many example sentences for JLPT4-3 grammar and phrases.

Been listening to Utada Hikaru album Heart Station highly recommended by the way, any similar music anybody recommends?

Have plans for many more articles in the near future including how I’ve been getting on with my goals I set not too long ago and how to keep motivated.
